Embracing Self-Care at St Werburghs Community Centre: SEND Yoga Class

One of the most cherished offerings here at St Werburghs Community Centre, is our Yoga Class for SEND (Special Educational Needs and Disabilities) parents, which has become a vital resource for many in our community. We sat down with Aziza, who joined the class this year. She kindly shared her inspiring experience with us.

Aziza, a mother of a child with autism, has been attending our SEND Yoga Class for over two months. She discovered the class through a Facebook group for parents of children with autism and, despite feeling nervous about trying yoga for the first time, decided to give it a try. Aziza reached out to our instructor, Bella Ludlam, ahead of her first class, and Bella’s kind, calm, and patient response reassured her.

On the day of her first session, Aziza was relieved to see other women in the class. She found the atmosphere to be very relaxed and non-judgmental. “The session was very relaxed, and I didn’t feel judged,” she recalls. Bella’s extensive experience in yoga instruction ensures that while the classes are challenging, they remain accessible and supportive. The class focuses on simple stretches, breathing and meditation exercises to help relax the body and mind. The class is for all levels and is accessible to those who are flexible or able-bodied.

For Aziza, who faces the physical and emotional demands of being a carer, weekends are far from relaxing. The SEND Yoga Class has become an essential part of her routine, allowing her to release tension and reset her body and mind for the week ahead. “It’s a good start to the week to prepare for the challenges ahead. It’s a reset for my body and mind,” she explains.

We’re especially pleased to hear that Aziza appreciates the variety of activities available at St Werburghs Community Centre. “I wish my area had something like this. People in St Werburghs are lucky to have such a resource,” she notes.

One of the most rewarding aspects of the SEND Yoga Class is seeing parents like Aziza embrace self-care. “This is the time of the week for me, not just being a carer,” Aziza shares. “I’m valuing looking after myself and prioritizing my self-care. It has taught me how important it is to look after yourself.”

Aziza’s enthusiasm for the class has led her to invite other parents from her child’s school. She always emphasizes that while it might be a bit of a journey for some, it’s entirely worth it. “We also share a bit with other parents during the class. It’s not so much about our children, but we get to know each other, and it’s nice,” she says.

At St Werburghs Community Centre, we’re proud to be a place where people can feel welcomed and supported. The SEND Yoga Class is just one example of how we provide a nurturing environment for parents like Aziza, offering them a chance to focus on their well-being while fostering a sense of community and connection.
